I have felt so fortunate to be wrapped into January’s beautiful world, as a friend and as a family photographer, and I absolutely love how equally wild and calming she can be. When I first knew January from the photos that she posts online, I was enamored with the peaceful green paradise that she’s created… but I can tell you that it is EVEN MORE than I could have ever imagined. The first time I walked into her house, with preconceived notions of oxygen-infused tranquility, as the door opened I was met with loud children everywhere (many not her own, as is the norm there!), art everywhere, and a wildness in the air that is even more intoxicating than my original fantasies of the house had been.
It is paradise.
I love how my conversations with January always go deep almost immediately, which remind me of certain parts of Puget Sound… perfect wading depths, and then before you know it the ancient glacial tracks have carved something not easily recovered from. To me that’s the perfect friend, because I would rather explore the depths with you than stay in the safe zone of small feelings.
And the way she loves her family! My goodness! January completely trusted my creative process–which I’m forever grateful for because I love every single image in this session–and in turn her family trusted her. I loved the way that she makes space for her partner, and the way she reached for her children in a way that was an act of protection as equally as it was an act of letting go. Their entire home together feels like a place where you go to grow and thrive, and I found it absolutely inspiring.
This photo session was a wonder to be a part of, and I can’t help but wonder if all that oxygen really does contribute to the creativity and love pulsing through that beautiful home. So BRB while I head to the nursery immediately. I need all of this in my life.
Thank you, January & family! Love you guys!
